Rich Schefren Called Me Out but I Stepped Up to the Challenge

“If you don’t know where you are going, how do you expect to get there?” -Basil S. Walsh

Last night, Rich Schefren called me out. He straight up embarrassed me in front of one hundred other students. I tried shrugging off what he said. I tried pretending he had no idea what he was talking about or who he was talking to. But the pit in my stomach told me that what he was telling me was true – success in this industry will continue to elude me and I am doomed to fail…

Okay, okay – Rich Schefren didn’t single me out personally. Instead, he called attention to the FACT that if you aren’t 100% clear about where you want to end up, you are destined to drift down the river of mediocrity. And, deep-down, I knew I was currently one of those people on that river.

For those of you who don’t know Rich Schefren, he is known as “the guru to the gurus” and is responsible for mentoring more online millionaires than any other person on the internet. Oh yeah, he is also the proud proprietor of an 8-figure online business. So when Rich Schefren speaks, you LISTEN – and last night, he spoke to us.

One of the (many) bonuses of being enrolled in the Alex Jeffreys’ 2.0 Coaching Program is the dynamic list of guest speakers that we are treated to. Last night, 130 fellow Alex Jeffreys students listened to Rich Schefren speak for over two hours about the “six crucial factors to online success.” The information he presented was invaluable to say the least. It’s not very often where you get to listen (for free) to a man who charges $2500 an hour to speak. But the idea that stuck out to me the most was his first topic of discussion, “business by design” and getting clear on what you REALLY want.

We all have heard the importance of setting goals and benchmarks on our “journey to success.” Many of us even write out our goals or at least have a vague sense of what we want to accomplish with our online businesses. But Rich says that a vague idea or a partial list of goals is not enough – for your online business to be truly successful, you need an established blueprint for success which requires you to map out EXACTLY what you want to accomplish with your business. In other words, you need a “business by design.”

What does that mean? We all want to make a lot of money (obviously). We all want to get to a point where we make enough money in our online businesses where we never have to worry about a J.O.B., or money, ever again. But money is really just a means to an end. So what, exactly, do you want the money FOR? Rich was adamant that you can’t just jump into your business and cross your fingers hoping for success. You need an end-game in mind. You need a clear destination. You need a plan.

And it makes sense, right? How can you possibly get to where you want to be if you don’t know where exactly it is you want to go?

This was Rich Schefren’s challenge to us. And it was a challenge I knew I needed to take up.

Like most of you, I have worked on “visualizing” a successful future. I have used the process of writing out specific goals, objectives, and benchmarks. I have read business motivation and self-help books by the score. And all this helps…for a little while. But somewhere along the line, I lose track of the “big picture.” I get so wrapped up in the day-to-day minutiae that I temporarily forget what it is I am working towards. I become so bogged down and enveloped in my to-do list without remembering the reason WHY I am working on those tasks to begin with. Or I write out goals and objectives that seem like good benchmarks without really thinking how they align with my overall (and vague) definitions of personal success. After hearing Rich speak, I realized I needed to go back to square one and “get clear.”

So this morning, I developed a quick mental exercise that would help me visualize my ideal end-game and get me back on track. The exercise took about 45 minutes to complete but was worth every second spent. I now know EXACTLY what it is I am trying to accomplish with my business. No longer do I have a vague sense of what success means to me. And though the action steps needed to arrive at my objective are still murky, I finally have a “clear” destination in mind. And with it, I have a peace of mind that has eluded me for a long, long time.

Rich Schefren called me out…and I rose to the challenge.

Check back next week as I outline the exact process I followed to finally “get clear.” I love feedback so please drop a comment if you liked (or didn’t like) this post!

Goals are simply the things you want to do in life, and by writing them down you can clarify exactly what you want and how you are going to accomplish them.

Most people have a vague idea of what they want to achieve in life, and keep these vague ideas in their head. However, because they are vague ideas the action they take to accomplish those goals is also vague. And as a result, usually ineffective.

So take some time to think about the things you want to accomplish in life. Write them down on a piece of paper, and create a plan as to how you will achieve those goals. It might just be the most important and valuable exercise you ever do.

I too was fortunate enough to be on the call with Alex and Rich, and wow what a call that was – I got so much great info and inspiration as well as the challenge!

I’ll be undertaking a ‘visualisation’ technique too so that I can clarify my goals and develop the plans that I have started to formulate.
    To our success!!

Syed – I couldn’t agree with you more. Just the simple process of writing down your goals and objectives helps you to become clearer on a plan of action and actually moves you that much closer to achieving them. I’m actually pretty good about writing down goals but as Rich Schefren spoke about, you have to dig even DEEPER than monetary goals and benchmarks – you have to become completely clear on why those goals are important enough to go after…and that’s what I did with the exercise I mentioned above – I came up with my 5-year vision. It makes the goals that I have written down actually WORTH shooting for!

Tom – you’ll have to let me know how that turns out! What Rich spoke about was stuff we have all heard before – but it was the fact that he’s the real deal and that he followed the same six steps to build his business that made his message resonate so much with me. I’m sure you felt the same way – keep plucking away and we’ll have to touch base soon, brotha!

    Hey Paul,

I’m first going to say that I love the headline “Rich Schefren Called Me Out…but I Stepped Up to the Challenge”.

For a minute I thought I missed something on the call…

For Alex Jeffreys to offer us such a bonus was incredible. Thinking that Rich’s time is worth $2000 dollars/hour and he spoke with us for over 2 hours was huge. I have so many notes I’m not sure where to start but I’m glad the call was recorded.

Now I know how to listen at double speed I will be listening to the all the recordings over again, what a time saver. I’m ever getting better at speed reading but I don’t think I will ever get to Rich Schefren’s level at +400%?

I pride myself for being organized and focused on what I’m doing, I have always been a little anal that way, can I say that here?

    Anyway

I’m glad Rich Schefren called you out and you rose to the challenge, I’m sure you were not the only one…

    Have a Great Day!

    Hey Paul
Stopped by to see your new blog and it looks great. Really liked your headline. I have to agree about the Rich Schefren interview is was awesome.
If you don’t mind can I give you some advice that was given to me? If you have the time, try to post several times a week. This way you get more exposure from Google.
    Just my 2 cents

    Paul,

Don’t worry about anything Rich has said before you learn the goal setting and achieving game.

Seriously, the main reason most people don’t make it is not because the don’t have a clear idea of the future they want but they’ve never learned goal setting or achieving first.

I love Rich… but you can do anything you want in life with goals… Once you know how to set them, work towards them and achieve them then you start dreaming about your future.

That’s how I do it… Hope that helps.

Don’t let anyone steal your dream and don’t ever give up on it either.

    That’s straight from Winston Churchill.

    You can do it.

Wow, Paul, that was good. I, too, was “called out” on a teleseminar a few years ago (and I won’t mention the guy’s name, because he made me angry), but he told me, me specifically, that I’d never make it because I was not sufficiently goal-oriented and did not have a clear plan in place. He said I should just cancel all my websites and give it up now. But then, he never told any of us on the call how to go about doing the necessary steps, so I’ve been searching for that information ever since. I think I’ve finally found the place to learn the how-to’s I’ve been missing all this time. Right here, with Alex and all of you, sharing what you’ve learned and showing us how it fits together. I can’t wait to read what you did next to “get clear.”

    Paul,
Taking it personal is the right approach! That’s the way to drive yourself to the end. I myself would benefit from assuming this attitude.
Again, I commend you for your courage.

Alvin – thanks for the comment. You don’t happen to know of any software that will increase playback speed for a Mac, do you? I know there are some things for Windows but haven’t come across the Mac versions.

Glenn – I’ve definitely taken what you said about posting more frequently to heart. I’ve been caught up in other “distractions” but agree that I need to get my voice out there more.

Rob – The title and opening paragraph were a little tongue-in-cheek as I have always been good about outlining goals; most of the time, however, they were not attached to an overall “vision” of where I was headed (ie, an exact picture).

Roberta – I agree that the Alex and the rest of the community at MWA are major positives in the game. Having access to the collective experience and expertise in that community is a HUGE boon to our efforts.

Jose – Absolutely it sometimes helps to make it personal…whatever it takes :)
