Great post! I’m just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it nicely – resources like this post are incredibly helpful. As our organization is dependent in the US, it?s all a little bit new to us. The example above is something that I be concerned about as well, how to show your own genuine enthusiasm and write about the truth that your product is useful in that situation.

Dena – thanks for the encouraging words. I am still trying to “find my voice” but I also know that you can’t get what you want until you help enough people get what they want. So, regardless of the space I carve out for myself here, I always want to focus on how I can help others.

This is a great post simply for “Don’t worry about getting it perfect, just get it going.” Just doing something is the key to success. You can’t when if you don’t play the game. Perfectionism for me was, for the longest time, nothing but an excuse to keep from moving forward. When I created Wage Slave Rebel my goal was to “have it done by Monday” and that was it. I didn’t bother perfecting the theme or editing posts or creating a backlog of posts. I rushed out a design in 3 days and launched it on a Monday morning and it was the FIRST undertaking of mine that actually succeeded.

Why did it succeed? Because it existed. Because I stopped being afraid of trying and I just did it.

Lots of times existing is all it takes.

Paul, you make a lot of great points here. I have to say, I love Alex’s advice: “don’t worry about getting it perfect, just get it going.” It sounds like you are headed in a great direction AND you are helping others to get on that path with you. It’s a perfect combination. = )

Hey Paul (aka cross between Confucius and Buddha),

This is my biggest problem… forgetting perfection, and just getting it done.

When I started my blog a couple months ago, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t even know how to buy a domain, set up hosting, let alone work Wordpress. But, I am confident that I can figure anything out, so I just followed a tutorial online. It took a couple days, instead of the planned four hours, but it got done.

Part of proceeding while it isn’t perfect is simply showing yourself that you can get it done even if it’s with flaws. Most things are able to be improved of fixed, but you can’t improve something that hasn’t even gotten started yet!
